Information about ants

Ants are one of the types of insects widely spread in this world, as the number of ants on the face of the earth is estimated at approximately 1 quadrillion, and to clarify more, this number is equal to one million billion,

As for the number of ant species, it reaches 12,000 species.

The original habitat and places of spread of ants

Ants originally appeared on Earth about 140-168 million years ago, during the Jurassic period; That is, when dinosaurs began to appear and when plants were spores and conifers such as pines and ferns, and ants were then in small numbers compared to other types of insects, then they began to spread widely and occupy large and diverse places to build colonies and store food.

With the transformations and climatic changes that have occurred in the world, ants have survived, thrived and multiplied to build the largest colonies on earth and to become the most widespread insect in the world. Finding ants in homes, agricultural lands and various regions of the world. Ants have the ability to face environmental challenges, which makes them resistant to them.

Ant food

Ants need water and food to survive just like any other living creature, and ants are carnivores and plants, which means that they eat most of the things that are digestible, and they benefit from all the foods they find in front of them to store food and feed the colony members, and the following are the most important nutrients that Ants prefer it

  • Protein:

Which ants find in all insects rich in protein, and its importance lies in that it feeds the ants sufficiently for growth and spread, the larvae and the queen of ants feed on them, and the workers of the colony cut and chew food and then feed them to the larvae to grow and grow, and one ant colony consumes 6 million insects throughout the year, whether they are Dead or alive by surrounding it, covering it, killing it, and then eating it.

  • Sugar and carbohydrates:

These elements provide the ants with energy, and they love and prefer sugar, and they get it from eating juice, honey, sugar, and a solution of water with sugar, and they eat it in balanced quantities to avoid death.

  • Water:

It is the essential element for survival, ants can live without food for a long time, but they cannot do without water, for example, tropical ants get water from the dew of leaves in the early morning, or from the walls of the nests after moisture collects on it, as he searches Always provide an ample source of water that is sufficient and constant.

The presence of ants is frequent over the foods scattered here and there on the ground and on the kitchen table, and they live in colonies that they build inside the house, then transport these foods and introduce them to the colony, to be eaten by young ants or larvae to grow and grow, as they are eaten by the ant queens that run this colony or what is known as the ant house, The ant group prefers to eat insects, sugars and water.

external ant shape

  • Body composition:

The ant’s body from the outside consists of three main sections: the head, thorax, and abdomen. Its outer skeleton is solid and tough, which makes it water-resistant. This structure is made of a substance called chitin that gives ants great strength. Ants are distinguished by their strength compared to their very small size. One ant can carry a piece of food 10 times the weight of the main ant.

  • Eyes:

Ants have two large compound eyes, in addition to a group of small and simple eyes that are located on the sides of the eye, and the task of this part is to sense light and shadow.

  • Antennas:

It is part of the external structure of ants, which is a substitute for the nose, through which they identify the ants that live with them in the same colony and discover enemies, and when the ants find food, these antennas emit pheromones that create pathways through the smell to find food.

  • Jaw:

Ants have an upper jaw that helps them detect smells, in addition to the lower jaw that they use to catch and carry food, cut and bite food.

  • Legs:

Ants have 6 legs that are attached to the chest area. Breathing holes: Ants draw oxygen through very small holes and holes throughout their body, and they also emit carbon dioxide.

  • The stem:

This is the part that connects the chest with the abdomen and may consist of one or two pieces, and this feature is used by researchers to identify subspecies of ants.

  • Head structure:

The head contains the main sensory organs, in addition to the organs responsible for processing food as a preliminary step. It contains the muscles that control the lower jaw, and the mouth that delivers food to the esophagus, in addition to the brain that is able to remember and learn, and is linked to the glands that control internal body processes.

  • The back of the thorax:

This part contains 3 openings through which gases are exchanged, and the blood travels through a long tube driven by the heart, starting from the head and ending in the abdomen, and this process leads to gas exchange and cleans the organs of ants.

  • Abdomen:

It contains the reproductive organs and the organs responsible for processing food. There are two stomachs: the social stomach and the natural stomach in which food mixes with fluids, and then after digestion, it comes out of the anus in the abdomen as well.

  • Reproductive organs:

These organs are located in the form of a tube, the egg is born in its beginning and then grows and passes through the oviduct, and there it is either fertilized or placed without fertilization.

Scientists have studied the structure of ants, just like other animals and insects on Earth, and determined this by classifying their structure into an external part that has tasks, and an internal part that completes these tasks, making the ant’s body a complete interconnected system that performs great tasks compared to its size.
